Satellite monitoring of emperor penguin colonies across Antarctica has strengthened evidence that the species faces mounting pressure as warming temperatures alter the habitat on which it depends. However, a proposal to designate the emperor penguin as an Antarctic Specially Protected Species failed to secure consensus at this year's Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM).
